BHUTAN
Bhutan, or Druk Yul, the land of the Thunder Dragon, a country whose inspirational aim is for gross national happiness, not product. A land in which the people benefit from free education and health-care paid for by the export of hydro-electricity leaving them free to concentrate on issues higher up Maslow's pyramid. The small population, leaves space between themselves, and live in the present. The lack of advertising takes the consumption pressure off. Their traditional dress is worn gladly and beautifully. The great age of their dzongs and monasteries is a tribute to their craftsmen and respect of their elders. The hillsides flutter with prayer-flags, drifting their messages across the winds. A place of calm and meditation, the faithful circle to the left. The landscapes contrast from the snows of the Himalayas, to the tropical forests of the southern borders. The flora and fauna equally as varied, snow leopards to crocodiles.
