FLOWERS FOR MUM
On 17. May 2021, our Mum died, 2 days short of her 86. birthday. May is not only the month in which she died, it is the month in which she was born, it is also the month that brings out her favourite flowers, the Moon-Penny Daisy. The Spring warmth makes the new grasses grow and with it these long stemmed daisies reach up to face the sunshine. They are a simple flower, much like a child might draw, mixing with the cornflowers, buttercups and dandelions, their heavy heads on delicate stems sway in the breezes. They are a wild flower but Mum grew them in her garden, to attract the bees and other insects, and just to enjoy their natural simplicity. The sun shone nicely on the 18. May and so in recognition of her and her upcoming birthday I did the only thing I can do for her, take photos of these lovely flowers growing wild close to the lake; and present them here for her, and for you. I love and miss you already Mum. MOON-PENNY DAISY
FLOWERS
Taking pictures of flower should be easier than landscapes, or people, as they do not move around and you can control the light the colouring and you have plenty of time to make adjustments on the camera. Like any portrait, the art seems to be to get the right angle on the subject, and getting the lighting right, such that it brings out the best in the subject. That might not mean its prettiest side, but the one that best describes it. These are my first attempts and plant portraits from which I hope I have captured some of their character, if not their prettiest side. IN THE STUDIO
IN NATURE
Cherry blossom is not only found in Japan in March, but also in Zugerland. The golf-course at Holzhäusern has many beautiful cherry trees, which flower in April - May and later become Zuger Kirsch a cherry liquor sold in distinctive narrow bottles. The evening sun light shining through the petals and branches, gives a fabulous glow and the April breezes vibrate the delicate flowers making macro-photography extremely tricky; but pleasing when the slow shutter and shallow depth of field blurs the blooms - you almost hear the bees buzzing, in the early season warmth.
